Admissions

SEHEJ School for blind serves students ages 5-22 who have a vision loss which severely affects their ability to access the general education or alternative curriculum and causes difficulty to such an extent that it adversely affects their educational performance requiring the services of personnel trained to work with blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind children.

In regards to "eligibility" to attend SEHEJ, there are two main considerations. One consideration involves eligibility requirements as defined within the California Code of Regulations, which are listed below.

How to Apply

Applicants eligible for SEHEJ day program are not automatically enrolled into the residential program. Enrollment into SEHEJ residential program is a separate and distinct consideration even for a pupil currently enrolled in CSB's day program. An applicant who meets the criteria established by section 17666 may also be admitted into CSB's residential program, if SEHEJ determines:

  1. (a) The applicant resides beyond a 60-minute commute each way between home and SEHEJ using transportation the LEA provides for day pupils.

  2. (b) The applicant has the ability to respond independently and appropriately to life-threatening situations.

  3. (c) The responsible local school district and parent/guardian have approved the applicant's placement in the residential program.

  4. (d) The applicant does not have a history of un-rehabilitated behavior that poses a threat to themselves and/or others, including but not limited to substance abuse, fire-starting, sexually predatory behavior or assault.

Tuition

he cost for SEHEJ differs based upon whether the student is a day student or a residential student.

Residential students are defined as those who "reside beyond a 60-minute commute each way between home and SEHEJ using transportation the LEA provides for day pupils." Residential students come to SEHEJ on Sunday evenings and return home on Friday afternoons, on a weekly basis, residing in a dormitory on campus during the school week. The cost to the district for a residential student is 10% of the unreimbursed costs to the state for educating and housing the student. This includes educational services, residential services, food, board, and all transportation costs. Generally, this amount can vary between $12,000 and $16,000 annually. This amount is deducted directly from the state allocation of funds for the school district; the district is not invoiced or billed.

For day students, SEHEJ does not charge the district any fees and no funds are taken from the district. However, the district is fully responsible for transporting the student to and from SEHEJ each day.
